Abstract Araucaria angustifolia is endemic to southern Brazil. Known as Brazilian pine, A. angustifolia is the only native conifer species with economic and social relevance in this country. Due to massive exploitation, it has suffered a significant population decline and currently is classified as critically endangered. This encouraged the scientific community to investigate genetic features in Brazilian pine to increase resources for management and preservation. In this work, RNA-Seq data was used to determine the complete nucleotide sequence of the A. angustifolia chloroplast genome (cpDNA). Comparison of seedling growth among three co-occurring varieties of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze under greenhouse conditions Acta Botanica

Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze is a tall, long-lived tree species, which grows as an emergent tree in the araucaria forests of southern Brazil. Four varieties have been described for this species, and three of them were selected for this study: "angustifolia" (the type variety), "caiova" and "indehiscens". These are co-occurring varieties that differ in external seed color and timing of seed maturation. The purpose of this study was to compare the initial growth of plants originated from seeds of these three varieties, in order to test the hypothesis that these varieties also differ in the initial growth of their seedlings. Establishment of post-harvest early-developmental categories for viability maintenance of Araucaria angustifolia seeds Acta Botanica

Araucaria angustifolia seeds are recalcitrant, and their metabolism remains high during storage. This research aimed to describe the initiation of germination in A. angustifolia seeds during storage in order to standardize the assessment of physiological quality and to promote seed conservation. Seeds were collected from two populations and stored for 270 days in the natural laboratory environment and cold chamber. Seeds were classified according to four early developmental stages: I - mature seeds; II - seeds with elongation along the embryonic axis; III - beginning of root protrusion; IV - advanced germination stage, with seedling shoots. Larvae and adults of Spermologus rufus Boheman can cause severe damage to seeds of Brazilian pine, Araucaria angustifolia. In this study, yeasts were isolated from seeds of A. angustifolia and from the digestive tract of S. rufus to verify their similarity and determine the existence of feeding sites in order to elaborate an artificial diet for this insect. Pichia spp. were found in seeds and Pichia spp. and P. stipitis Pignal in the digestive tract of S. rufus. The low variability among observed microorganisms suggests a food preference, which can facilitate the elaboration of artificial diets.

Monoicy in A. angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze (Araucariaceae): I. Morphological aspects of the reproductive structures Anais da ABC (AABC)

Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze is a dioecious conifer species native of Brazil. The rare occurrence of monoiceous specimens have been attributed to pathogenic infections or other injuries in adult trees. Here, the morphological characteristics of male and female cones and pollen grains of a monoiceous A. angustifolia are described. Male and female cones and pollen grains presented normal morphology, lacking any sort of injuries or infection and suggesting the existence of further grounds for the occurrence of monoicy in this conifer species.

Germination metabolism of recalcitrant seeds of Araucaria angustifolia is activated in storage, which complicates the seeds conservation and utilization. This study aimed to identify the changes in the reserve metabolites of A. angustifolia seeds throughout storage in order to understand the processes of hydrolysis caused by germination metabolism. Mature seeds were harvested in southern Brazil and stored in an ambient environment and cold chamber conditions. Resprouting ability and intensity after damage in seedlings of the large-seeded species Araucaria angustifolia Braz. J. Plant Physiol.

The role of seed reserves on the ability to resprout and on the responses of resprouting in Araucaria angustifoliawas investigated. Seedlings were separated into three groups: plants which had their shoot damaged, a similar group in which damaged plants had their connection to the supporting seed removed, and a control group. All damaged seedlings resprouted, but those which remained connected to their seeds had a greater mass of resprouted shoots than the ones disconnected from their seeds. A greater accumulation of seed mass in the underground hypocotyl was a very distinct initial response to damage, but, on the long run, damaged plants were able to reestablish a biomass allocation pattern, which was very similar to the control plants. Sensitivity of brazilian-pine (Araucária angustifolia) embryos to desiccation and temperature PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

The “recalcitrant” behavior of Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze seeds (Brazilian pine) limits the conservation of genetic resources of this important species in ex situ genebanks. As initial steps in developing storage protocols, we studied the interaction of water content and temperature on embryo survival. Embryos were excised from seeds and “flash-dried” to water contents as low as 0.29 g water/g dry mass and then exposed to 0°C, -5°C and -18°C for 4 h. Drying rate was calculated from drying time courses and expressed as (g water / g dry weight) / hour.
